As I mentioned last post, our home team season with the LA Derby Dolls has begun! The first matchup of the season was the Tough Cookies vs the Sirens. The Cookies are this past season’s Champs, and the Sirens just barely beat my team, the Varsity Brawlers, in champs in 2012. Needless to say, it’s a good match up. But who do you root for when you have friends on both teams?!
My teammate, Cirque D’Slay, and I figured out how to handle this situation! ROOT FOR OUR FRIENDS AND HECKLE EVERYONE ELSE! And how do you most effectively do this? With foam fingers! Or I guess in our case, foam munchies!!! The Sirens, a LAPD themed team, often have a donut mascot that marches around with a megaphone, getting the crowd all riled up. And the Tough Cookies… well… COOKIES! Donuts and Cookies it is!
Here’s how we made our cheering accessories!
What you need:
- Approx. 1 yard of 1/2″ – 1″ thick foam
- Spray Paint
- Acrylic Craft Paint
With a sharpie, draw two circles the same size on your foam. I tied string around the pen and made Cirque hold the other end down when I drew our circles. Cut em out!
Then we painted the foam, base layer of white, then design on top. I highly recommend WHITE foam. We got green cuz it was waaaaay cheaper. Ended up being waaaaaay more work! Lesson learned.
Another lesson, spray paint covers faster than acrylic craft paint! Doh!
Let them fully dry. Then, trace around your hand, leaving about an inch of wiggle room all around. Hot glue all over that sucker, make sure not to go inside your trace marks. Stick the two sides together, shove your hand up in there, and cheer or heckle your little heart out!
